| Important Information for Men/Women
with Disabilities: |
| Conditions such as heart disease, osteoporosis, cancer and obesity
can affect everyone, even those with disabilities that make it difficult
for them to get around. While tending to a disability may be first
on your health care list, you should still be sure to visit a physician
once a year to be checked for conditions not related to your disability.
Your physician can assess what you are most at risk for and suggest
appropriate testing and screening. |
| |
| Heart Disease |
| Factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking,
poor diet and obesity can lead to heart disease. The risk also increases
with age. Most of these factors are controllable, so do your best
to lower your risk. |
| |
| Osteoporosis |
| Osteoporosis is a condition that causes bones in women to become
weak and brittle. If you have a disability that prevents you from
taking part in weight-bearing activities such as walking, jobbing
or stair climbing, your chance of developing osteoporosis may increase.
Other risk factors include low body weight and low calcium intake.
Bone loss usually occurs without any symptoms, so it is important
to be screened for osteoporosis if you are at risk. |
| |
| Cancer |
| The key to early detection of breast, cervical and colorectal cancer
in women (as well as other forms of cancer) is testing. Starting at
age 18 a Pap test, pelvic exam and breast exam should be done every
year. You should have a mammogram done each year beginning at age
40. In addition, colorectal screening should be done starting at the
age of 50. |
| |
| Overweight |
| Having a body weight higher than what is recommended for you can
put you at risk for diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and several
forms of cancer. Eating a well-balanced diet and getting as much exercise
as possible are the two best things you can do to maintain a healthy
weight or to lose weight. If exercising is difficult for you, contact
a fitness specialist about appropriate activities. (Make sure your
doctor is made aware of any fitness programs you begin). |
